Losar ist das tibetische Wort für Neujahr. Lo heißt Jahr und sar heißt neu. Losar ist der wichtigste Feiertag in Tibet, Nepal und Bhutan.
Losar wird 15 Tage lang gefeiert, mit den zentralen Feierlichkeiten an den ersten drei Tagen. Am ersten Tag des neuen Jahres wird ein Getränk namens changkol von chhaang ( ein Cousin des tibetischen Bier) gemacht. Der zweite Tag des Losar wird als Königs Losar ( gyalpo losar ) bekannt. Losar wird traditionell von der 5 Tage Praxis auf Vajrakilaya vorausgegangen. Denn die Uiguren adoptieren den chinesischen Kalender, und die Mongolen und Tibeter adoptieren die Uiguren Kalender, Losar tritt in der Nähe oder am selben Tag wie das chinesische Neujahr und das mongolische Neujahr, aber Losars Traditionen sind einzigartig für Tibet und datieren beiden indischen und chinesischen Einflüssen vor. Ursprünglich wurden alten Feierlichkeiten von Losar einzig zur Wintersonnenwende aufgetreten und wurde nur bewegt, mit der chinesischen und mongolischen Neujahr von einem Anführer der Gelugpa-Schule des Buddhismus zu kongruieren.
Losar wird mit auch gefeiert bei den Yolmo, Sherpa, Tamang, Gurung, und Bhutia, obwohl verschiedenen Regionen jeweiligen eigenen Neujahrs in diesem Staat haben. Losar ist auch von den tibetischen Buddhisten in aller Welt gefeiert.
